Levelling up your trusty group of superheroes in Marvel's Avengers will take much longer than before once the native PlayStation 5 version is released on 18th March 2021. That's because developer Crystal Dynamics is increasing the amount of XP you'll need to reach the maximum rank of 50 as part of an upcoming patch that will be deployed alongside the current-gen version. The California-based studio claims this is being done because players are currently levelling up too quickly, leading to pacing problems and the potential to overwhelm new players.
Detailed over on the game's official site, it is explained that the development team doesn't really believe its XP curve actually is one whatsoever. Instead, it's a straight line — every level requires the same amount of XP to reach. "This has led to pacing issues, such as skill points currently being rewarded too fast, which may be confusing and overwhelming to newer players. We want each decision to invest in a skill or Heroic to be more meaningful." Because of this, the number of experience points you need to level up will gradually increase as you reach level 25. The previous ranks won't have their XP requirements tweaked. Crystal Dynamics has advised you work on levelling up your characters before this patch hits on 18th March if you don't want to have to earn more XP.
Elsewhere, cosmetic rewards are being tweaked and having their randomness factor removed. This is being done to provide "more player agency and clarity about how to obtain" items. While this is being worked on, the cosmetic vendor will still offer various Outfits and Nameplates. Some emotes will also be added to the store in question when 18th March arrives.
The developer signs off by saying that these changes will make Marvel's Avengers "a more balanced experience overall". What do you think of these changes? Let us know in the comments below.

So a game that is already a chore to play, is now going to be even more of a chore to the plat? Guess ill buy it now rush it out before this releases. Avengers has its good parts but they are few and far between
And these types of balancing considerations are why I hate service based games; they continually need to reset progress for older players in order to accommodate the new. If I’m not feeling I’m progressing or, worse, my progress is being made meaningless at some point, I can’t enjoy a game.
That's one way to try make your suckers..... sorry I meant players, to spend more time engaging with your product. In the brief time I spent with this game, the last thing I wanted to do was spend more time with it
Well now they're just flogging a dead horse.
First Crystal Dynamics does a bang up job in ruining a great franchise and now they proceed to stick it to gamers and Marvel fans by giving them even less of an incentive to buy..
Or is this the inspired idea of some marketing suit who thought "I know what, let's get them to panic buy!"
That's nuts. It already felt like it took forever to level. I already wasn't coming back, guys, you don't have to keep giving me reasons.
Wow what a bloody cheek, its already a huge grind so they make it worse? The cosmetics so far are a joke and its clear they want you spending on the overpriced sh*tty skins they have on the marketplace (it costs £12 for Hulk wearing a hat and vest for instance) so clearly they are making it worse to force you to spend.
Yeah i'm done now, i got them all to Lv 50, really enjoyed the campaign and somehow got a 100 hours from it but the live service side sucks and the content roll out is to thin, the constant nerfs and useless gear just kills it for me.
Gotta keep the money rolling in 💲💲🤑🤑💷💷
It's like they're intentionally trying to drive people away from this game.
I don't quite understand the reasoning here. Crystal Dynamics says it's to stop players feeling overwhelmed, but progression is being slowed down halfway through the levelling system. I'm normally overwhelmed by levelling at the very start, not halfway through.
Bonkers decision, I am one of the idiots who got the platinum on this game and it took way too long, to think it is now even longer is crazy!
It is a real shame as the single player aspect of this game is great and if it was released with no multiplayer or as a stand alone like Miles Morales then we would be talking up this game not down, CD really dropped the ball with this one.
What an awful way to treat the five people who will actually play it 🤣
Yep, that's the way to attract people to a live service game. Haven't enough of these types of games died for publishers to get the hang of what will/won't work?!
This game is trying hard to do everything wrong, isn't it?
I hear the campaign is actually ok but there's no way I'm getting this unless it's super cheap or on Plus.
No, you misunderstand. They're "balancing" the game so they can sell micro-transactions to speed up your experience gain. I'm sure they'll be timed.
How to make a bad game even worse 101
Hmm, how can we make a bad game worse?
@AFCC LOL, should have read yours before posting mine!
So the answer is to make people play the game more. okay.
Grindfest got more grindy.
We as players need to make it known we don’t want needless grind. We want rewarding levelling up systems
The game is great. The decisions made about it are most certainly not. With different management it could have been something truly special.
How do we make the end game last longer?
Triple the grind?
Promote this person!
🤦♂️
Ok I just hope it plays and looks well on the PS5
Making people grind even more won't fix anything. It's the grinding that is incredibly boring.
By any chance will they be selling an XP booster micro-transaction???
Yeah... I think I’m just gonna stay away from the game.seems like a lot of grinding to me.
@LiamCroft yeah this was my exact impression from this. After level 25 you’re only unlocking what I would describe as the “talent” skills anyway like just modifiers to your abilities that you should already have a handle on.
@Thelegend159
You just know they will.
Has there been a more tone deaf game released in the past 10 years than this one? This is the definition of a game that was made by a committee. Miss me with this BS. Hard pass for me.
Maybe they should take the anthem route and just let it die.
"How can we make our game worse?"
It’s because they don’t have enough to keep people engaged. No one is overwhelmed at Lv 25. Bullcrap. This game is actually getting worse. Wow.
And they'll make it look like you get enough spending stuff for the cometics and then the ones will think omg I can get it all and keep playing. It's just an excuse to keep the players for a dying horse just do an Anthem and kill it off already,
@WallyWest If i hear you talk about it the game with the polish would have been fine without the liveservice and would have worked way better if they costumes would be unlocks. Its such a pity this game game could have been great as a singleplayer with (couch) coop.
@Voltan I really think they pulled a EA and it started as a singleplayer. Then halfway through one exec said it has too be liveservice. I dont care if you have the rest done subpar make it liveservice.
@shonenjump86 you don't have to grind, if you focus on the campaign.
@RBMango My thought exactly
@LordSteev all fine! Great minds think alike!
As a Marvel fan, this game feels like a slap in the face. I am glad games like Spider-Man and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order exist so that game developer companies can have some clues on how to work with beloved franchises.
@naruball would you say the campaign is worth a play through?
@shonenjump86 absolutely. I can't recommend it highly enough. As long as you don't pay attention to anything else, you'll have a great time.
